Lawn Seeding

Spring Seedings

We prefer to seed in the fall and only seed in the spring if absolutely necessary. One major reason for a spring seeding includes a heavy leaf drop in the fall that would smother the new grass. Spring seeding’s are a challenging process in that the broadleaf and grassy weeds infiltrate and create a mess.

Fall Seedings

This is THE BEST time to seed our cool season grasses. The high soil temperature from the summer and watering create an excellent germination process. Then as the temperatures cool in the fall, the grasses thrive.
We offer several 3 methods of seeding:

  • Power Seeding – This is THE BEST method of seeding. The power seeder slices the soil and lays the seed down. Direct soil to seed contact. 90% plus germination if watered properly.
  • Aeration and Overseeding - An aeration can also be accompanied with an overseeding for added seed germination with SOME direct soil to seed contact.
  • Overseeding – Simply spreading seed. This method is great when accompanied with a topdressing to increase soil to seed contact.

Aerations

Let your lawn breathe! This is one of the best cultivation methods that you can provide for your turf. Core aeration extracts soil plugs from the root zone of the turf. This allows for water and air infiltration down into the root zone of the turf. Your grass can then basically breath better. Additionally, this relieves surface compaction and provides a form of de thatching.. The de thatching process works when the soil plugs are on top of the grass as they melt, they will decompose the thatch layer. Finally this is a method of disease prevention. Excessive thatch is a huge form of why our grasses get diseases. Less thatch means less disease.

Compost - Top Dressing

Top dressing is the process of applying compost, soil, or sand over the surface of your lawn. It has been performed on golf courses since the sport was invented in Scotland, but has only recently become popular on home lawns.
Good soil is living soil. That may sound like cliché, but it's true. One tablespoon of soil can contain billions of microorganisms. These microscopic organisms are one of the reasons we have plants and trees. In nature, soil microbes enrich soil by converting fallen leaves, limbs and other debris into nutrients plants can use. Since many home lawns have poor quality soil, top dressing can be very important. Top dressing with the materials we use is simply a way of adding organic material and restoring the microbial balance to home lawns, building better soil and improving the ability for the soil to facilitate healthy plants.
Below is a list of some of the benefits when topdressing lawns:

  • Adds organic matter to soils.
  • Can build up the soil flora.
  • Top dressing combined with core aeration can place organic material deeper into the soil.
  • Organic top dressing can change soil structure.
  • Compost top dressing with the right biological components can help reduce lawn diseases.
  • Adding compost helps reduce traffic stress.
  • Compost incorporated into heavy soils helps relieve compaction problems.
  • Compost incorporated into sandy soils helps with water retention.
  • Top dressing with the right materials can help reduce the need for fertilizer.
  • Top dressing can help reduce thatch.
  • Now we have partnered with Mirimichi Green for our top dressing materials. MG PRO Soil Enhancer is made from a professional blend of premium organics and USDA Certified Bio based Activated Carbon designed to permanently improve the health and efficiency of the soil in order for plants to thrive. MG PRO Soil Enhancer contains long-lasting fixed carbon that remains in the soil to increase water availability, store nutrients, and promote a healthy biological rhizome.
